COMMUNITY
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEENS The Friends of the Woods is a nonprofit organization of youth and adult volunteers who are caretakers of Highland Avenue Woods Environmental Education Reserve. The group is now recruiting teens to assist in several capacities at the new Nature Center to fulfill community service hours. The Green Team members are needed for both indoor and outdoor programming and maintenance, on weekdays and on weekends. Responsibilities include staffing the reception desk, signing in participants, registration, assisting with story time crafts and games, and helping youngsters to follow drawing lesson instructions. Outdoor help includes filling the bird feeders and birdbaths, light facility maintenance such as raking leaves, sweeping the decks and walkways, or shoveling snow off the rear observation deck. Other duties include picking up litter, trimming the trailhead, gardening and trail monitoring. Community service hours will be recorded, and letters verifying participation will be written for each Green Team member. For more information, contact Dorothy Miele at 908-754-3073 or e-mail SPNatureTrails@cs.com. On the web: http://geocities.com/friendsofthewoods.

4-H "PROJECT GIFT" wrapping-up its 10th season of helping needy families cope with the Holidays. The Teen Council in association with the Junior Council is proud to announce the 10th Anniversary of PROJECT GIFT, a unique day of pre-holiday shopping for needy families in Middlesex County. Special arrangements are made each holiday season to transport these families to an undisclosed location, where the parents can use tickets to "shop" for various donated and purchased toys and gifts, and have them wrapped as their children are in a separate area making crafts, watching movies and being supervised by the older teens and advisors. The families are then reunited for some refreshements before returning to their homes or temporary living quarters. Throughout the year, special fund-raising projects are earmarked for this very inspiring project, such as the annual Haunted House and other activities. While the project is almost complete, there is still time
to make donations of cash or new, unused toys, clothing and other items
for Project Gift by calling the
