3 RINGS OF TRADITIONAL FAMILY FUN...

THE SALAAM SHRINE CIRCUS

For the first full week of May, those who attended the 32nd Annual Salaam Shrine Circus at the Mennen Arena in Morris Plains were treated to a fantastic show filled with thrills, chills, and sights that would awe children of any age.

The Hanneford Circus, based in Florida, is one of the oldest in the United States and this year's bill was one of the finest ever produced for the Livingston-based Salaam Shriners.

This year's Salaam Shrine Circus Chairman, Ed Strungis, who also serves as one of the top officers of Salaam Shrine, explains "While many circuses are "re-inventing" themselves, such as Ringling Bros., which this year moved away from the timeless three ring show, Hanneford's puts together a three-ring circus lineup that is truly awesome."You have the usual animal acts, jugglers, and the like, but also this year's edition of the Circus features daredevil motorcyclists, and the world-acclaimed Flying Wolendas, the family-based team that works, sans-net, and performs stunts on a high-wire that can only be labelled as "breathtaking".according to some of the UPBEAT NEWS readers who won family packs of tickets to see the show.

Each show, the Shriners run a drawing where some lucky audience member receives a gift-certificate for a bicycle. The bicycles are furnished by the various units that comprise the Salaam Shrine and include volunteers who are organized into a variety of musical, performing, mobile, special-interest, patriotic, veteran and ceremonial groups. The Shrine Circus Clown Unir, which perform bits during the show and entertain Shrine Hospital children are always a big hit with the kids. Another character (pictured on our front page is the jolly mascot, Fred the Fez, who is a giant replica of the traditional tasseled fez hat worn by all Shriners which they proudly wear.

The Salaam Shriners are part of the International Shriners organization that owns and operates the hospitals that provide free medical care to children to age 18 who suffer from orthopaedic and severe burn injuries. The nearest Shrine Hospital in Philladelphia specializes in orthopaedic patients and is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic systems that can measure and evaluate a patients progress. While the Circus proceeds are not used for the Hospitals, the Shriners run events throughout the year that generate the means to keep the Hospitals running and their services free to their patients.

For more more information about the Shrine organization, which is a part of the Freemasons, visit their website at www.shrinershq.org or call the Livingston-based Salaam Shrine at 973-992-1111.

RARITAN VALLEY ROAD RUNNERS ANNOUNCE 2006 YOUTH DEVELOPMENT RUNNING SERIES

The Raritan Valley Road Runners have announced their Tuesday Youth Development Running Series for children 13 years and under on June 13, June 27, July 18, and August 1 at Donaldon Park, Grove 1 at the foot of South 3rd Avenue in Highland Park, NJ. Registration is from 5:00 - 5:45 PM and the first run, the quarter-miler, starts promptly at 6:00 PM (rain or shine).

The runs are non-competitive in nature. The organization wants children to be able to enjoy the event and the activity of running, which is a simple but effective form of excercise and builds stamina and self-confidence.

Participants will have the opportunity to run quarter, half and one mile runs. The entry fee of $20.00 per child for the series (all 4 dates) includes a custom-designed tee shirt and awards to all runners who complete 3 or 4 of the runs. Those who sign-up for individual runs for $5.00 entry fee per race can select the days they wish to participate but do not get a t-shirt. The award ceremonies will be held immediately after the last race on August 1st.

The Raritan Valley Road Runners are part of the national Road Runners organization, dedicated to promoting the activity of running for fitness, health and recreation.

For more information, forms and directions, contact the RVRR through their website www.rvrr.org.
