Equipment Essentials for Baking

Many have commented that they would love to bake more in their homes, but are not sure what equipment they need until they are in the middle of a recipe.

Listed below are my personal suggestions and recommendations for minimal kitchen equipment for general baking: (Print out for handy reference)

Electric Stand Mixer (Mrs. M uses Kitchen Aid)

Electric Hand Mixer (Mrs. M uses Kitchen Aid)

Food Processor - for chopping nuts and preparing some doughs (Mrs. M recommends Cuisinart or Kitchen Aid)

Liquid Measuring Cup (Pyrex)

Volume Measuring Cup set - minimum set should have 1 cup; 1/2 cup; 1/3 cup; 1/4 cup

Measuring Spoons - minimum set should have 1 tablespoon (tblsp); 1 teaspoon (tsp); 1/2 teaspoon, 1/4 teaspoon

Rubber Spatula

1, 2, 3 and 4 Quart Flat-bottom Mixing Bowls, stainless steel or Pyrex

Two Loaf Pans - 8.5 x 4.5 and 9 x 5 are standard sizes

8 x 8 inch or 9 x 9 inch Square Pan (to make brownies)

12 cup Muffin Pan

Tube Pan (also called Angel Food Cake Pan)

Two Cake Pans (either 8" or 9" rounds, removable bottoms preferred)

Sheet Cake Pan (9" x 13")

9" Pyrex Pie Plate (glass browns crusts better than metal)

Two Cookie Sheets, 10" x 15" or larger

Egg Separator

Cookie Scoops in 1 tablespoon and smaller sizes

Wire Cake Racks - two or three 10" and one 10x14 inch sizes (for cooling cakes)

Rolling Pin

Pastry Blender

Storage Containers (for storing ingredients airtight - keeps freshness in and critters out)

Whisk

Toothpicks or Cake Tester (to test doneness of cakes)

Large spoons for beating and mixing

Oven Mitts or Pot Holders - don't bake without them!

Hand Soap - don't bake or cook without washing your hands!

Questions will be answered in future columns.

SideBar
Laughs

From time to time we hear about neighbors who bicker between themselves, oftentimes for no real reason. We think, that would never happen to me, I get along with everyone!

Well, not too long ago, someone who lives in Indiana had new neighbors move in...and within mere days, the problems started.

When talking it over did not resolve the fray, that homeowner decided to take matters in his own hands and at the annual State Fair, invested in a rooster. It orginally was more of a joke, but somebody had one for sale and they bought it.

The misguided bird crowed at dawn, in the afternoon, and at night.

It turns out the new neighbors actually liked the rooster and thought it reminded them of their farm they left behind. And now instead of distain, the two families live in harmony, over the "thoughtful gesture that welcomed them to their new neighborhood".

Now, that is something to crow about!

TWO SOUTH PLAINFIELD GROUPS
RENEW THEIR ADOPT-A-SPOT CONTRACTS

Two promenent groups concerned about the environment have renewed their Adopt-A-Spot agreements with the Borough of South Plainfield.

Paul Panzarella, president of Panzarella Contracting Inc., renewed his company's adoption of Monument Park. His company participated in developing this new Borough park across from Spring Lake in 2004, and installed the landscaping. Then he signed up with the Clean Business Association's Adopt-A-Spot program so he could take care of the grounds.

During the past two years, four to five employees have visited the park weekly to maintain the turf, trim shrubs, rake leaves or remove litter, as needed. As a result, this neat, trim public space has provided an appropriate setting for the monuments gathered there to honor those who have rendered service to the community.

Meanwhile, South Plainfield's Sacred Heart Church parishioners have renewed their adoption of Putnam Park, at the corner of Oak Tree Avenue and Park Avenue. They first adopted the park in 2004, as the park was being expanded and renovated. Three adults and eight to ten children do periodic litter cleanups.

Putnam Park shields the Putnam Avenue residential neighborhood from the commercial traffic and retail areas along Oak Tree and Park Avenue. Often, litter blows across the road from the shopping centers and accumulates along the fence. Sacred Heart's efforts to keep the Park in good condition are appreciated so residents can enjoy its recreational facilities and green open space.

The Adopt-A-Spot program is a great project for community-minded businesses, groups, or individual families who want to keep our public areas clean and green. For more information about the Adopt-A-Spot program in South Plainfield, contact the Clean Communities Coordinator at (908) 226-7621.
